Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Released the Five-year Roadmap of Optoelectronic Devices Development Focus on the field of Communication Fiber Optic Cable and Special Fiber

Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the "China Optoelectronics Device Industry Technology Development Roadmap (2018-2022)" (referred to as the "Road Map"), which analyzes the pros and cons of the industrial competition in optical communication devices, communication fiber optic cables, special optical fibers and optical sensor devices in China, and the opportunities and challenges faced by the optoelectronic device development in China.

In terms of communication fiber optic cable, the Roadmap points out that at present, the technical accumulation of new ultra-low attenuation light in China is insufficient; the key raw materials such as fiber preform production materials and fiber coating materials are restricted by raw materials; the fiber optic cable industry is excessively dependent on the domestic market and lack of internationalization capability; the submarine optical cable application scenarios in the domestic market are insufficient, and therefore difficult to support effective breakthroughs in technical bottlenecks.

The Road Map proposes that China's communication fiber technology will be wholly upgraded in an ultra-low attenuation direction. By 2022, China's ultra-low attenuation fiber production will increase more than 60% in the total output of single-mode fibers, and the nationalized silicon-based materials-preform-fiber coating-fiber optic - fiber optic cable integration industrial chain will be formed. The industry's average R&D investment accounts for 5% of sales revenue, and Chinay will participate or preside over 1 - 2 times of formulation or revision of international standards for fiber optic cable industry.

In terms of special optical fiber, the Road Map points out that the capacity of the current domestic market is small, enterprises lack product development motivation; research and development starting time was late, and the overall technology and industrialization are backward; standardization development is lagging; key equipment and raw materials are not self-sufficient; foreign enterprises sets high technical barriers and patent barriers for special Fiber optics.

The Road Map proposes that, in terms of special optical fibers for active and passive devices, EDF for EDFA will be localized by 2022, completely replacing the imported products. Domestic market share of polarization-maintaining fibers for domestic devices will exceed 50%; for special optical fibers for lasers, the localization rate of double-clad large mode field erbium-doped fiber for medium and low power fiber lasers will have an increased t over 50% by 2022; for special optical fiber for optical sensors, mass production of domestic optical fibers of screening strength exceeding 100kpsi and long-term high temperature resistance above 300°C by 2022; the localization rate of rotating optical fiber will increase more than 60%, and domestic BI fiber will share more than 80% of the domestic hydrophone market.
